Welcome to Wolverhampton Grammar School’s WWI memorial website.
Wolverhampton Grammar School’s Memorial to 102 Old Wulfrunians who died in the Great War, 1914 – 1919, was unveiled on 1st February 1922. This online Memorial has been established to mark the Centenary of that unveiling. In 2018, an additional plaque was placed in Big School, recording the names of the four masters who died (two of these had moved elsewhere before the War began) and of one Old Wulfrunian omitted from the original Memorial.
The school photograph above, taken in the Summer Term of 1910, shows 13 masters and 240 boys. Two of the masters (Harry Sackville Lawson and Tom Baker) and about 30 of the boys in the picture were to die in the War. HS Lawson is seated on the left of the master’s row; Tom Baker may be fifth from the left but is harder to identify.
The School magazine, the Wulfrunian began to publish obituaries of the fallen in 1916. Many of those who died in 1915 were not remembered in this way, though their photographs, with brief details, appeared in December 1915.
The Profiles of the Fallen given here include:
- Details of each person’s years at School and War Service.
- Details of the place of burial or commemoration.
- The photograph and obituary published in the Wulfrunian (where they exist). The obituary may be accessed by clicking on the photograph of the text.
- A new and updated biography for each person, compiled from School, local and national records.
Within the ‘Links’ section you will always find a link to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission page for the individual. Links to the Wolverhampton’s War site are also given where available.
No attempt has been made during the course of this project to contact the families of those remembered on the Memorial. Corrections and new information to add to these accounts would be most welcome. Please email archive@wgs-sch.net
The extended text on this page includes more details of the background to this project and the earlier research upon which it was based. This section also includes the key general references used. Individual sources consulted are included in the biographies.
